What are the best options to travel from Baltimore to Washington DC?
We are having a difficult time finding hotels in DC that aren't $10000000 for the Obama inauguration. I found a pretty good deal for air & hotel for Baltimore, but how much of a pain in the rear would that be to get to and from in general. Obviously, things will be amped up 1000 times during this time. I don't have a freakin' clue about this part of the country, so any thoughts are welcomed. :) You are the best KAL! :) *hugs* Washington, D.C. - 7 Answers

There's MARC and there's Metro, so you should be okay going in from Baltimore by rail. Take MARC to Union Station, and then take Metro to get more specifically where you need to go once you're in DC.

I don't have a clue about this part of the country either...except that I visited DC last summer...so I gave my cousin in VA a call...she's lived in or around DC most of her life. Basically you have two options for getting from Baltimore to DC...rent a car and drive it yourself or use public transportation (rail to get you to DC, subway from there). We drove in from VA, parked in Springfield VA and took the train the rest of the way in...and after witnessing the traffic when my cousin picked us up and dropped us off at the airport (Dulles) I'd take the Metro any day! Now what this might be like during inauguration neither of us have a clue...and this one could be especially crazy...I wouldn't want to be anywhere near that circus!

Try the MARC (Maryland Area Rail Commenter) train. You can not take Metro as it only goes half way to Baltimore. http://www.mtamaryland.com/services/marc/

Definitely stay away from DC central as rates and availability is almost gone as I hear it. Baltimore is a good choice. Also, try other "fringe" areas like Springfield, Fairfax, Reston, Alexandria in Virginia; and Annapolis, MD Columbia MD Rental car will be absolutely required. Be prepared to use Metro from the outer fringes, and be aware that MARC and Virginia Rail may not be operating on weekends or Inauguration because its considered a Federal Holiday. Metro will be a mess, but frankly, you will have no other choice in the matter as a million people will be anticipated or more. I've done it before...think Times Square on New Years for 24 hours straight. Those locations should work if you book now. Be sure to snag your rental car early too! They will soon be sold out too!
